AY 3/1 The Church Street Sewer and an Adjacent Building - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Whitwell reports the discovery and partial excavation of a Roman sewer system during building operations in Church Street, York.

The sewer lies within the legionary fortress and is close to a previously excavated bath building, meaning excavation had the potential for allowing further information to be gained concerning the little known plan of this military structure. The purpose of the sewer, the way it was operated, the source of the water supply and the fortress are discussed and comparisons drawn with other Roman sanitary systems.

There is reference to the results of environmental sampling, which contained evidence of ancient flora and fauna. This important source of knowledge is discussed fully in AY 14/1. The origin and character of the rocks used in construction of the sewer are also described in detail and discussed in relation to the more general use of building stone in Roman York. The associated finds, including glass vessels, intaglios, gold, and other ornaments are described in AY 17/1.

AY 4/1 Riverside Structures and a Well in Skeldergate and Buildings in Bishophill - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Report on the excavations within the area of the Roman colonia, located at the foot and top of a terrace, overlooking the River Ouse.

The north-east end of the Skeldergate excavation revealed a sequence of seven Roman roads (spanning the late 1st to the late 4th century in date) along the riverside. A lack of evidence for Roman occupation in the western area of the site has prevented definitive interpretations. Occupation has, however, been dated by the finds (including a timber-lined well) to the 2nd to 4th century.

The Roman buildings at Bishophill were found to have been devastated by stone-robbing, medieval pit-digging and post-medieval building, although broad periods of Roman activity were identified. Finds included quantities of painted wall-plaster, and the largest stratified group of York legionary-ware pottery to have been excavated in association with other ceramic types.

AY 7/2 Anglian York: A Survey of the Evidence - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The importance of York in the Anglian period is well recorded in historical documents, which demonstrate that it was both a royal and an ecclesiastical centre. York was the seat of a Bishop, and after 735 of an Archbishop. This book gathers together for the first time all the published and unpublished archaeological sources for Anglian York, and records some 85 sites which have produced evidence for Anglian activity in the city.

AY 8/3 Urban Structures & Defences, including the Lloyds Bank ex - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

AY 8/3 Urban Structures and Defences, including the Lloyds Bank Excavations

A series of excavations south of the Roman fortress, on the spur of land between the Rivers Ouse and Foss, provided evidence for the nature and extent of settlement in Anglo-Scandinavian York. They also showed how much could be learnt from an examination of well-preserved organic remains, plant and insect assemblages gave an indication of diet and living conditions; tools and leather offcuts recovered suggested intensive leatherworking. The book also includes a review of current evidence for the evolution of the defences around the Roman fortress and how they were altered in the Anglo-Scandinavian period.

Bedern Hall and the College of the Vicars Choral of York Minster - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The first in a new series of popular guide books. In the middle ages York Minster's Vicars Choral had their college residence in Bedern, where up to 36 singing priests, the deputies for the Minster's canons, lived together in a communal life centred on their chapel and their common hall. Their buried remains were discovered by York Archaeological Trust in a mammoth series of excavations before the area was redeveloped. Their chapel and hall both still stand, and they too have been studied, revealing that Bedern Hall, in particular, was a splendid building, its impressive medieval timber roof, window tracery and the remains of what may have been the earliest fan-vaulted bay-window in England still survive. It now serves as the Guild Hall for three of York's guilds, the Freemen of the City of York, The York Guild of Building and The Company of Cordwainers.

A Heroes History of the Anglo Saxons - Books - Childrens selection

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Following the collapse of the Roman Empire, Britain was settled and dominated by pagan Germanic people. Missionaries arrived to convert many to Christianity. Its people survived numerous Viking invasions and internal fighting and finally a single nation emerged. We discover that the Anglo-Saxon period was not a 'dark' time in our history, but one of amazing achievement. The only English King to be called 'Great' lived in these times. Much of our cultural heritage, laws and our language began here. If that isn't enough, we have in recent years unearthed the most stunning buried treasure! The finds at Sutton Hoo represent the finest craftsmanship in Europe at the time.

A Heroes History of the Tudors - Barley Hall Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The book is about an amazing period of British history, when for the first time an Englishman sailed around the world, North America was discovered, printed books appeared and Spain tried to invade England. Today it is called the Tudor period, which began with Henry Tudor in 1485 and ended with the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. It was the end of the Middle Ages and the start of the Renaissance in Europe, which saw a revival of Greek and Roman art and learning, new ideas and philosophies. It all spread quickly because of printing, world expansion and the Protestant Reformation when the church in England split from Rome. Some of the most colourful and exciting kings and queens reigned during this time. This book will tell you all about their interesting lives, as well as what life was like for ordinary people.

A Heroes History Of the Vikings - Books - Childrens selection

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Written by William Webb

The Vikings came from their Scandinavian homeland, terrifying the Anglo-Saxons who had settled down in England. Their savage raids in dragon-headed longships have become a well-known part of our history. However, the Vikings also settled down, farmed the land, traded goods with other countries and were skilled explorers, artists and craftsmen. They sailed as far west as North America centuries before Christopher Columbus and reached Jerusalem and Baghdad in the east. The Viking Age lasted about three hundred years. The Vikings brought dramatic changes to Britain and their influence can still be seen today. You can read more about these fascinating people and learn about this exciting time in our history in the following pages of this book. Paperback.

An Introduction To English Runes - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Runes are quite frequently mentioned in modern writings, usually imprecisely as a source of mystic knowledge, power or insight. This book sets the record straight. It shows runes working as a practical script for a variety of purposes in early English times, among both indigenous Anglo-Saxons and incoming Vikings. In a scholarly yet readable way it examines the introduction of the runic alphabet (the futhorc) to England in the fifth and sixth centuries, the forms and values of its letters, and the ways in which it developed, up until its decline at the end of the Anglo-Saxon period. It discusses how runes were used for informal and day-to-day purposes, on formal monuments, as decorative letters in prestigious manuscripts, for owners' or makers' names on everyday objects, perhaps even in private letters. For the first time, the book presents, together with earlier finds, the many runic objects discovered over the last twenty years, with a range of inscriptions on bone, metal and stone, even including tourists' scratched signatures found on the pilgrimage routes through Italy. It gives an idea of the immense range of information on language and social history contained in these unique documents. The late R.I. PAGE was former Professor of Anglo-Saxon in the University of Cambridge.

AY 10/1 The Church of St Helen-on-the-Walls, Aldwark - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Rescue excavations by York Archaeological Trust on the north-east side of Aldwark, York, in 1973-4 revealed foundations of the parish church of St Helen-on-the-Walls. The earliest phase of the church, a small rectangular single-cell building, was stone-built with a mortar floor and overlay the mosaic of a 4th century Roman town house. Probably dated to the late 10th century, this church was later extended by the addition of a square chancel, which itself was subsequently extended.

AY 10/3 The Bedern Foundry - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

A report on the remains of a medieval industrial complex, including evidence for timber-framed workshops containing hearths and furnaces. Over 13,000 mould fragments were found; these suggest that the main products of the foundry were small cauldrons. The foundry probably operated from the 13th to the early 16th century.

AY 10/4 The College of the Vicars Choral of York Minster at Bedern - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

AY 10/4 The College of the Vicars Choral of York Minster at Bedern: Architectural Fragments

This publication examines 412 architectural fragments from the Bedern excavations of 1973-80. The majority of these fragments were not cut for the College at Bedern, but were brought to the site as rubble for re-use in successive medieval and post-medieval building campaigns. Much of the stone was originally cut in the 1160s and 1170s for the new choir and western towers of York Minster. This material can tell us more about the appearance of the 12th century Minster and helps us to date the Bedern buildings which re-used the Minster masonry.

AY 10/5 The Vicars Choral of York Minster: The College at Bedern - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Excavations on the site of the College of the Vicars Choral in York, between 1973 and 1980, revealed an extensive complex of college buildings, representing 30% of the estimated college precinct at its maximum extent, and providing the most comprehensive archaeological study of one of Britain's Vicars Choral Colleges yet.

The archaeology of the college buildings mirrors the growth and decline of the college, and reflects the trend away from communal life to individual houses. The investigation provided valuable insights into life in a medieval urban religious house and is complemented by reports on the finds (pottery, animal bones and plant remains), all of which contribute to a greater understanding of the daily lives of the vicars.

AY 10/6 Medieval Urbanism in Coppergate: Refining a Townscape - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Excavation of four medieval properties in Coppergate, a street known to be particularly prosperous in the 13th-16th centuries, has revealed the most extensive archaeological view of an 11th- to 17th-century secular township ever recovered in York. Anoxic conditions have preserved the remains and allow an unprecedented view of York's houses, workshops and properties during centuries when none survives above ground and documentation is sparse.

AY 10/7 Medieval Metalworking and Urban Life at St Andrewgate, York - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The site at St Andrewgate yielded evidence for both ferrous and non-ferrous metalworking from the 14th century, with metalworking workshops active from the early 14th to the early 16th century. The products made by the non-ferrous metalworkers were similar to those manufactured at the adjacent Bedern foundry. Lists metalworkers in the late 13th, 14th and 15th centuries from the York Freemen's Register.

AY 11/1 Union Terrace: Excavations in the Horsefair - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Excavations at Union Terrace, York, in 1972, revealed continuous occupation from the late 12th century to the mid 17th century. The first building was used as the 13th century church of the Carmelite Friary. It was later divided into a chapel and small rooms, with latrines in a subsidiary block. These later remains are interpreted as those of St Mary's Hospital in the Horsefair.

AY 11/2 - The Window Glass of the Order of St Gilbert of Sempringham: a York-based Study - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The excavations on the site of the Gilbertine priory of St. Andrew at Fishergate, York, uncovered the largest quantity of window glass from any building associated with this peculiarly English medieval monastic order. It is the only assemblage of any size to come from a modern, controlled excavation. Research on this glass provided the opportunity to study all other known assemblages of window glass associated with the Gilbertines. The book explores the relationship between the glass and the social context of its use, re-use, changes in form and deposition. Art-historical, archaeological and literary evidence is brought to bear, in conjunction with scientific analysis and experimental conservation work. The report also includes a discussion of the innovative conservation and storage solutions developed for excavated medieval window glass.

AY 12/3 The Jewish Burial Ground at Jewbury - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Excavations in 1982/3 uncovered the remains of the cemetery of the Jewish community of York. It was first used between 1177 and 1230, and remained in use until the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290. The remains of nearly 500 individuals were recovered for anthropological analysis; the results represent the only detailed study of a medieval Jewish population from England. Studies were made of the distribution of burials according to age and sex. It was also possible to analyse burial alignment and to estimate the size of the medieval Jewish population in York. Information was gained on laying out methods, burial positions and coffins. This was compared with what is known of Jewish burial practices elsewhere in Europe and with contemporary Christian sites in York.

Information on skeletal characteristics includes dental calculus and pathological changes in bones, including evidence of surgical practice. The skeletal material from Jewbury was compared with that form the Christian cemetery of St Helen-on-the-Walls in York as a test for genetic distinctiveness.

AY 14/1 The Environmental Evidence from the Church Street - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

AY 14/1 The Environmental Evidence from the Church Street Roman Sewer

44pp, 4 illustrations ISBN: 0 900312 41 6 AY 14/1

The excavation of a Roman sewer, apparently serving the bath house of the legionary fortress at York ( AY 3/1 and AY 17/1), produced biological evidence about species living in the sewer. The most numerous animal remains were insects, and these formed the basis of the interpretation suggested here. The insect fauna included species tolerant of foul conditions and other species suggested that grain was stored in a building in the vicinity of the sewer. The absence of water beetles implies that water for the baths came from a spring along a closed aqueduct.

AY 14/2 Biological Evidence from the Roman Warehouses in Coney Street - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

56pp, 7 illustrations ISBN: 0 900312 87 4 AY 14/2

Immense numbers of grain beetles were found with a few seeds of arable weeds, clearly representing the remains of a large quantity of spoilt grain. A layer of silt over this was probably put there to seal off the infestation. A substantial quantity of charred grain of mixed composition was also found. The possible origin and intended usage of the grain are discussed; importation from existing centres of insect infestation, perhaps in southern Britain, seems probable.

AY 14/5 Environmental Evidence from a Roman Well and Anglian Pits in the Legionary Fortress - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

 48pp, 12 illustrations ISBN: 0 906780 62 4

AY 14/5

A discussion of the environmental evidence from samples of Roman and Anglian deposits in The Bedern and Aldwark, York. Those samples from the late 2nd-mid 3rd century timber-lined well in The Bedern yielded large assemblages of biological remains pointing to the dumping of surface deposits, probably from an area of rough grassy vegetation. Other components of the fills indicate spoiled grain, peat, box leaves, a salt-marsh flora, and perhaps even human faeces. The similarity of these components to those from the fills of the Roman well in Skeldergate (AY 14/3) is striking. Evidence of a warmer climate than at present is offered by four species of heteropterous bug well to the north of their present range. Evidence from the Anglian deposits suggests a phase of lower occupation density, which is highly significant in an area so close to the centre of York.

AY 14/6 Environmental Evidence from the Colonia: Tanner Row and Rougier Street - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

148pp, 28 illustrations ISBN: 0 906780 90 X

AY 14/7

This detailed study of Viking Age urban deposits incorporates an immense quantity of data concerning plant macrofossils, the eggs of parasitic worms, arthropods and other data groups. The results are summarised by period, tenement and feature type and discussed by topic, with an appreciation of the evidence for diet, health and craft activities.

AY 15/2 Bones from the General Accident Site, Tanner Row - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

76pp, 16 illustrations ISBN: 0 906780 78 0 AY 15/2

This report describes the results of a study of nearly 20,000 bones recovered from deposits at 24-30 Tanner Row, dating from the Roman to the medieval periods. The results show evidence of systematic butchering of cattle carcasses on a commercial scale during the late 2nd to the early 3rd century. The possible significance of the 'first' record of the species Eliomys quercinus (garden dormouse) is discussed. Comparisons are made with results from other Roman sites in Britain. Bones from medieval deposits comprised a mixture of debris from domestic occupation and craft or industrial activity, including quantities of goat horncores.

AY 15/4 Bones from 46-54 Fishergate - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

98pp, 14 illustrations ISBN: 1 872414 23 0 AY 15/4

This report presents the results from a study of bone assemblages from 8th-9th century deposits associated with Anglian activity and from a medieval priory of the Gilbertine order. Anglian samples were characterised by a very low diversity of taxa, with cattle predominant. It is argued that the Anglain occupation differed from later urban sites in its provisioning strategy, and that it may have been a specialised trading settlement. The priory gave few useful bone assemblages, but the 16th century deposits yielded a wide range of game birds and fish.

AY 15/5 Bones from Medieval Deposits at 16-22 Coppergate and Other Sites in York - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

144pp plus index to fascicules 1-5, 22 illustrations, 4 plates ISBN: 1 872414 93 1 AY 15/5

A detailed analysis of 11th to 15th century bone assemblages from 16-22 Coppergate and a synthesis of data from ten other sites in the city of the same period. Mortality data showed little change from the Anglo-Scandinavian period at Coppergate, apart from an increased culling of young lambs. The city-wide analysis shows some patterning of deposition, with some deposits containing more butchers' than household debris. Across the medieval city as a whole, cattle are much the most abundant taxon, with sheep generally outnumbering pigs. The ecclesiastical college at The Bedern gave assemblages with numerous young calves, quite unlike the rest of the city. Comparisons are drawn with data from other medieval towns in eastern England.

AY 16/2 Roman Pottery from the Colonia: Skeldergate and Bishophill - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

68pp, 27 illustrations
ISBN: 0 900312 71 8
AY 16/2

Some 13,000 Roman sherds were recovered from this site. Important dated groups include a large deposit from the made-up levels of an artifical terrace constructed at Bishophill in the later 2nd century. A discussion of the more interesting wares includes unusual imported types such as Pompeian-red ware and African red slip, as well as the local 'Eboracum' ware.

AY 16/3 Medieval and Later Pottery from Aldwark and Other Sites - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

128pp, 54 illustrations
ISBN: 0 906780 66 7
AY 16/3

The excavation of a site adjacent to 1-5 Aldwark in 1976-77 produced a quantity of well-stratified pottery dating from the 11th to the 18th century. A discussion of methodology is followed by sections on the main archaeological periods. For each period the archaeological evidence is summarised and the main fabric types listed and discussed. A short concluding section draws attention to any rarity or absence of types of imported ware, which may have socio-economic implications for the site.

AY 16/6 The Pottery from 46-54 Fishergate - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

128pp, 37 illustrations
ISBN: 1 872414 31 1
AY 16/6

This report comprises an important discussion of the Anglian pottery discovered in Fishergate, which included local, regional and imported wares. The high proportion of foreign wares suggests that the site might have had a special role in international trade. The pottery evidence does not support the idea of continuity of occupation beyond the mid 9th century. This hiatus is followed by deposits containing late Anglo-Scandinavian wares.

They provide information of great value to those investigating a wide range of topics in social and economic history - they are in fact a "right riveting read" for anyone interested in York's medieval past. There is an extensive glossary in which unfamiliar medieval terminology is explained, and a very substantial index.

AY 8/5: Anglo-Scandinavian Occupation at 16-22 Coppergate - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

by Richard A. Hall with D.T Evans,K. Hunter-Mann and Ailsa Mainman

This volume provides the long-awaited final report on the excavations of the Viking-Age tenements on Coppergate ('The Viking Dig'). Excavations at 16–22 Coppergate uncovered a large swathe of York’s late Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian townscape on a spur of land between the Rivers Ouse and Foss. The report charts the establishment and subsequent development of four urban properties, demarcated by fence lines, which were still recognisable into modern times. A total of seventeen structures, some of them still standing almost 2m high, were excavated on these properties, arranged gable-end to the newly established street of Coppergate or on land immediately behind. Excavation of the backyards of the plots, which extended behind the buildings down towards the River Foss, revealed them to have been used for cess-pits, rubbish pits, and small-scale animal husbandry and horticulture, accessed from the structures along wattle or plank pathways. The survival of wood allowed for a very large number of dendrochronological dates to be established and these, augmented by other scientific dates and a sequence of coin dates, provide a detailed chronological framework for the site.

subsequent watching brief and small-scale excavation on an adjacent site revealed evidence for further properties and structures of the same character. These findings, combined with the detailed evidence from the main excavation, facilitated an unparalleled examination of a large tract of York’s townscape which includes early churches and the west bank of the River Foss, and charts the rebirth of urban life in York in the pre-Conquest period.

Finding Richard III The Official Account - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Their task was to locate a lost grave in an obliterated church. The ‘Looking For Richard’ team of historians and researchers spent many years amassing evidence. Now for the first time they reveal the full story of how that evidence took them to a car park in Leicester.

Reports of the dig and DNA fingerprinting were shown world-wide and won awards. But the years of prior detective work have never before been recognised.

Latin texts, mediaeval priories, old maps, long-lost memorials, misleading tales of grave desecration ... not a Dan Brown novel, but a sober account of how painstaking studies of historical records achieved the goal of finding Richard III.

Informed by Dr John Ashdown-Hill’s sound knowledge of the Franciscans (Greyfriars) and their architecture, together with his discovery of Richard III’s mtDNA, the LOOKING FOR RICHARD PROJECT launched by Philippa Langley rested on solid foundations. It rested equally on her own exhaustive research into the Greyfriars site, and her indomitable determination to see it through.

Other members made up a team that until now kept a low profile, combining to facilitate, raise the money (the search cost some £40,000), and cultivate an ethos that laid emphasis on respect for a king who fell defending crown and country. Historian Dr David Johnson and his artist wife, Wendy Johnson, proposed a tomb design that won approval from the Richard III Society, whose members overwhelmingly financed the search.

Edited with the sure touch of writer and author Annette Carson, this publication reveals how scholarship and research into 500 years of history underpinned an enterprise of which the world saw only the triumphant end result.

Henry VIII and his Six Wives A Guide to Historic Tudor Sites - Barley Hall Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

A greatly romanticised era of history, the Tudor period kick-started one of the most significant shifts in British culture ever to occur. When the notorious Henry VIII began his hunt for a male heir it led to momentous changes: the British Crown breaking with Rome, the Reformation and the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Of the six wives Henry wed successively, two were executed – a chilling first in English history. From these tumultuous events an incredible number of historic sites linked to the Tudors survive, accessible now through this beautifully illustrated book.

Henry VIII: The Life and Rule of England's Nero - Henry VIII - Power & Glory

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

This compelling account of Henry VIII is by no means yet another history of the ‘old monster’ and his reign. The ‘monster’ displayed here is, at the very least, a newer type, more beset by anxieties and insecurities, and more tightly surrounded by those who equated loyalty with fear, self-interest and blind obedience. This ground-breaking book also demonstrates that Henry VIII’s priorities were always primarily martial rather than marital, and accepts neither the necessity of his all-consuming quest for a male heir nor his need ultimately to sever ties with Rome. As the story unfolds, Henry’s predicaments prove largely of his own making, the paths he chooses neither the only nor the best available. For Henry VIII was not only a bad man, but also a bad ruler who failed to achieve his aims and blighted the reigns of his two immediate successors. Five hundred years after he ascended the throne, the reputation of England’s best known king is being rehabilitated and subtly sanitized. Yet Tudor historian John Matusiak paints a colourful and absorbingly intimate portrait of a man wholly unfit for power.

Heroes History of Medieval Britain - Barley Hall Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The Medieval period was a fascinating time in British history. The landscape changed dramatically with the building of huge castles to control the land. Young noblemen learned the rules of chivalry and trained to become knights. The church became very powerful and was even feared by kings. It financed the construction of magnificent cathedrals and was the centre of art and learning. Most people were farmers who endured a hard life working on land owned by noblemen who in turn owed service to the king. It was a very bloody period with wars against the Irish, the Welsh and the Scots and a long war with France. There were crusades to the Holy Land and powerful lords fighting each other for power, or the throne of England. Our book begins at the time of the Norman conquest of England and ends at the start of the Tudor monarchy, with the defeat of Richard III by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth.

Jacks - Victorian

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

KnucklebonesFivestones, or Jacks, is a game of ancient origin, usually played with five small objects, or ten in the case of jacks. Originally the "knucklebones" (actually theastragalus, a bone in the ankle, or hock[1]) were those of a sheep, which were thrown up and caught in various manners. Modern knucklebones consist of six points, or knobs, proceeding from a common base, and are usually made of metal or plastic. The winner is the first player to successfully complete a prescribed series of throws, which, though similar, differ widely in detail. The simplest throw consists in tossing up one stone, the jack, and picking up one or more from the table while it is in the air. This continues until all five stones have been picked up. Another throw consists in tossing up first one stone, then two, then three and so on, and catching them on the back of the hand. Different throws have received distinctive names, such as "riding the elephant," "peas in the pod," and "horses in the stable."

Latrunculi - Roman

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The Romans had a game known as Ludas Latrunculorum ("The Game of Soldiers"), or Latrunculi for short.  This game was played on various sized boards between two opposing forces.  It was first documented in 116-24 BC and played up until approximately 400 AD.  The Romans carried it to Ancient Egypt and Persia, where it was known as Nard.  (Not to be confused with an entirely different game of Nard played in the medieval times which is similar to backgammon.)  [...] It is possible that this game is a descendant of the Ancient Greek game City.  There is a theory saying the Celts picked up Latrunculi at Hadrian’s Wall and carried it north in approximately 200 - 300 AD

Medieval Craft and Mystery - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

York's famous cycle of Mystery Plays was first performed in the late 14th century, and was an important feature of city life for almost 200 years. The 50 plays were all funded, produced and performed by the city's craftspeople, each one the responsibility of one trade, whether it be the tanners or shoemakers, goldsmiths or armourers, cooks or butchers. York Archaeological Trust has been excavating in the city for 40 years, and has provided fascinating evidence of the lives of these craftsmen (and occasionally craftswomen), ranging from the physical remains of the places where they lived, worked and met, through to the tools they used and the products they made. Beautifully illustrated throughout, this book explores the lives of York's medieval artisans, using this newly acquired archaeological knowledge together with insights from historical documents of the times to bring the original performers of medieval York's Mystery Plays to life.

Medieval Goldsmiths - Barley Hall Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Goldsmiths were among the most highly regarded craftsmen in the medieval world, making extravagant objects from precious gold and silver, often enriched with rare stones and engraved gems. As well as royal and aristocratic patrons, much of their work was created for the Church, as it was thought that ‘such display praised God’. For this reason many pieces that survive today were preserved in the treasuries of churches, where they escaped the ravages of history. In this wonderfully illustrated book, John Cherry explores the goldsmith’s craft through works in the British Museum and from collections around the world. The British Museum holds some of the most splendid examples of medieval goldsmiths’ work in the world, including the peerless Royal Gold Cup. With a description of the craft, its reputation in medieval times, and the raw materials used, the author offers an intriguing introduction to the expertise of the workmanship and the success of the trade. Who were the goldsmiths? Who did they work for? What influenced them, and how much freedom were they given to design? These questions and others are explored in this classic book, now redesigned in a lovely new format and illustrated throughout with new colour photography.

The question of his reburial has provoked national debate and protest, taking levels of interest in the medieval king to an unprecedented level. While Richard's life remains able to polarise opinion, the truth probably lies somewhere between the maligned saint and the evil hunchback stereotypes. Why did he seize the throne? Did he murder the Princes in the Tower? Why have the location and details of his reburial sparked a parliamentary debate? This book will act as both an introduction to his life and reign and a commemoration to tie in with his reburial.

Sweet Fishes: Stories from Castle Market - York & Yorkshire

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The Castle Market in Sheffield has a place in many people's hearts. In this booklet we celebrate what is special about the market on the eve of its move from Exchange Street to a brand new building on The Moor.

This work was generated as part of a community project called 'Trading Histories'. Archaeologists, artists, photographers and poets worked with volunteers and the traders to document the market and explore its history, its people and their memories. The project ran from November 2012 to October 2013, covering the final year of the market at its location in Exchange Street prior to its move to new premises on the The Moor.

Do you remember buying sweet fishes? Did you get a shirt from Harringtons? Did you jump on the weighing scales as a child? And what about the remains of Sheffield Castle, lurking in the ground below....

The City Walls and Castles of York: The Pictorial Evidence - YAT Publications

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

160pp, 120 illustrations (26 in colour)
ISBN: 1 874454 36 1

Together with the Minster, the walls and bars make York one of the most instantly recognisable cities in the kingdom. The defences are the most complete in England, with the walls set upon high ramparts and retaining their principal gateways. Although the walls are still standing, there has been relatively little opportunity for archaeological investigation, so documentary and pictorial evidence are of paramount importance. York is fortunate in possessing excellent collections of both.

The book outlines the historical background from the pre-Conquest defences to the present day and considers the walls, bars and posterns, the Old Baile and the castle in detail. It is a splendid and well-illustrated publication that will appeal to anyone interested in the history of York, military history, art, architecture or archaeology.

The Daughter of Time - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Josephine Tey's classic novel about Richard III, the hunchback king, whose skeleton was discovered in a council carpark, and who was buried in March 2015 in state in Leicester Cathedral. The Daughter of Time investigates his role in the death of his nephews, the princes in the Tower, and his own death at the Battle of Bosworth.

Richard III reigned for only two years, and for centuries he was villified as the hunch-backed wicked uncle, murderer of the princes in the Tower. Josephine Tey's novel The Daughter of Time is an investigation into the real facts behind the last Plantagenet king's reign, and an attempt to right what many believe to be the terrible injustice done to him by the Tudor dynasty. Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history.

Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world's most heinous villains - a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother's children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the the Tudors? Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard III really was and who killed the Princes in the Tower.

The Last Days of Richard III - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The Last Days of Richard III contains a new and uniquely detailed exploration of Richard's last days. By deliberately avoiding the hindsight knowledge that he will lose the Battle of Bosworth Field, we discover a new Richard: no passive victim, awaiting defeat and death, but a king actively pursuing his own agenda. It also re-examines the aftermath of Bosworth: the treatment of Richard's body; his burial; and the construction of his tomb. And there is the fascinating story of why, and how, Richard III's family tree was traced until a relative was found, alive and well, in Canada. Now, with the discovery of Richard's skeleton at the Greyfriars Priory in Leicester, England, John Ashdown-Hill explains how his book inspired the dig and completes Richard III's fascinating story, giving details of how Richard died, and how the DNA link to a living relative to the king allowed the royal body to be identified.

This lively book considers the various fascinating stories which have evolved to explain the ownership, concealment and discovery of the pieces whilst also placing them in the wider context of the ancient game of chess and secular art of the Middle Ages.

The Poetic Edda - The Mythological Poems - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The vibrant Old Norse poems in this collection, which may have been bought toghether as early as the thirteenth century, authentically capture the ancient oral traditions of the Norsemen. In addition, their imaghes of a mythical world profoundly influenced latter-day storytellers such as Richard Wagner and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Knows as the "Lays of the Gods," these mythological poems include the Voluspo, one of the broadest conceptions of the world's creation and ultimate destruction ever crystallized in literary form; thje Hovamol, a comilation of sagacious counsels reminiscent of the biblical book of Proverbs; the Lokasenna, a comedy bursting with vivid characterizations; and the Thrymskvitha, a ballad of enduring loveliness.

The Poetic Edda is not only of the highest interest to students of antiquity; in the exceptionally detailed and complete translation included here, it offers lovers of poetry and myth some of the most remarkable surviving specimens from a distant age of poet-singers and oral traditions.

The Prose Edda - Tales from Norse Mythology - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Gods and giants bestride these anicent tales, in which warrior queens and noble heroes battle with elves, dwarves, and fearsome monsters. Spanning the dawn of the world's creation to its fiery destruction, these gripping Norse legends chronicle the triumphgs and tragedies of a lost era. Resounding with a poetic instinct for the picturesque, the dramatic, and the human, they form vivid portraits of the characters' personalities. They also depict the comic and disastrous results of ambition, passion, and destiny.

The wellspring of modern knowledge of Norse mythology, these sagas preserved the Vikings' narrative style from an invading European influence. Iceland's great literary genius, Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241), combined oral traditions, genealogical records, and old songs to immortalize his country's glorious past. Edda means "poetic art," and Sturluson's guidebook for Icelandic poets has been a timeless inspiration for generations of readers around the world, including Wagner, Borges, and Tolkien.

The Sunne in Splendour - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Richard, last-born son of the Duke of York, was seven months short of his nineteenth birthday when he bloodied himself at the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury, earning his legendary reputation as a battle commander in the Wars of the Roses, and ending the Lancastrian line of succession.

But Richard was far more than a warrior schooled in combat. He was also a devoted brother, an ardent suitor, a patron of the arts, an indulgent father, a generous friend. Above all, he was a man of fierce loyalties, great courage and firm principles, who was ill at ease among the intrigues of Edward's court. The very codes Richard lived by ultimately betrayed him.

But he was betrayed by history too. Leaving no heir, his reputation was at the mercy of his successor, and Henry Tudor had too much at stake to risk mercy. Thus was born the myth of King Richard III, the man who would stop at nothing to gain the throne.

Filled with the sights and sounds of battle, the customs and love of daily life, the rigours and dangers of Court politics and the touching concerns of very real men and women, The Sunne in Splendour is a richly coloured tapestry of medieval England.

The Third Plantagenet - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Less well-known than his brothers, Edward IV and Richard III, little has been written about George, Duke of Clarence, leaving us with a series of unanswered questions: What was he really like? What set him and his brother Edward IV against one another? And who was really responsible for his death?

George played a central role in the ‘Wars of the Roses’, played out by his family. But was George for York or Lancaster? Is the story of his drowning in a barrel of wine really true? And was ‘false, fleeting, perjur’d Clarence’ in some ways one of the role models behind the sixteenth-century defamation of Richard III?

Finally, where was he buried and what became of his body? Could the DNA used recently to test the remains of his younger brother, Richard III, also reveal the truth about the supposed ‘Clarence bones’ in Tewkesbury?

Here, John Ashdown-Hill brings us a new full biography of George, Duke of Clarence, which exposes the myths surrounding this important Plantagenet prince, and reveals the fascinating results of John’s recent reexamination of the Clarence vault and its contents.

The Vikings and the Victorians - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

This is the first book-length treatment of the Victorians' fascination with the old north. It explores the ways in which the terms 'Viking' and 'Viking Age', both unknown in 1800, were invented, explored and popularised during the nineteenth century. The material examined - published and unpublished - includes novels, poems, plays, lectures, reviews, secondary school textbooks, saga-stead travelogues, private correspondence, art and music, as well as dictionaries, grammars and scholarly editions of eddas and sagas. In the cast of characters Sir Walter Scott, William Morris, Edward Elgar and Rudyard Kipling appear alongside long-forgotten amateur enthusiasts from Lerwick to the Isle of Wight. We follow the pursuit of Viking-related archaeology, dialectology, folklore, philology, runology and mythology. We see the old north used to legitimise many concepts and causes - from buccaneering mercantilism and imperial expansion to jury trial and women's rights. In drawing this wide range of materials together, Andrew Wawn presents a comprehensive and colourful account of the construction and translation of the Viking Age in Queen Victoria's Britain.ANDREW WAWN is Professor of Anglo-Icelandic Studies at the University of Leeds.

Viking Poetry of Love and War - Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The Vikings are not often thought of as poets, though they came from a culture that valued poetry highly and rewarded poets handsomely. There is evidence for the kinds of poetry favoured by the Vikings from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries, in oral tradition, in runes and in medieval manuscripts. This book features a selection of carefully-chosen poems to encompass the rich store of genres and styles of the Vikings, whose poetic language is colourful, intricate and steeped in mythological knowledge. The style of the poetry ranges from the highly formal to the scurrilous, and is often light-hearted, even in the face of death and tragedy. Beautifully illustrated with works of art from the British Museum collection, this book captures perfectly the essence of Viking Poetry and offers a fascinating glimpse into the ideology of the time.

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Written by Fiona Macdonald and Mark Bergin

Step inside a Viking town and discover for yourself what it was like to live and work in this bustling centre of long-distance trade. Admire the well-built houses before joining the town's defenders as they fight off an attack by rivals from across the sea. This is a superbly-illustrated look at the daily lives of different types of Vikings. Astounding architectural acheivements are explained and explored with full-colour cutaway illustrations. Pinpoint enlargements focus on the day to day lives of the people, looking at how they ate, dressed, entertained themselves and sometimes fought. Illustrations of artifacts and paintings from the era help to support the main text by providing proof which explains how we know what we know. Informative captions, maps, a complete glossary and an index make these titles ideal educational texts. Each one features a sturdy flexi-bound cover with gold foiling.

Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England - Micklegate Bar Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

In his remarkable debut, Penn vividly recreates the dark and turbulent reign of Henry VII. He traces the transformation of a young, vulnerable boy, Prince Henry, into the aggressive teenager who would become Henry VIII, and of Catherine of Aragon, his future queen. And at the book's heart is the tragic, magnetic figure of Henry VII - controlling, paranoid, avaricious, with a Machiavellian charm and will to power.

Wolf Hall - Barley Hall Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

The greatest literary sensation of recent times – and now the inspiration for a major BBC series, starring Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis and directed by Peter Kosminsky.

In this staggeringly brilliant novel, Hilary Mantel brings the opulent, brutal world of the Tudors to bloody, glittering life. It is the backdrop to the rise and rise of Thomas Cromwell: lowborn boy, charmer, bully, master of deadly intrigue and, finally, most powerful of Henry VIII’s courtiers.

Both winners of the Man Booker Prize and already hugely successful stage plays, WOLF HALL and its sequel BRING UP THE BODIES have now been transformed into a BBC television series starring Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, bringing history to life for a whole new audience.

Wolsey: The Life of King Henry VIII's Cardinal - Barley Hall Books

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Cardinal Wolsey is a controversial figure: a butcher’s son, a man of letters and the Church, a divisive political expert, a man of principle – yet, to some, an arrogant upstart. As Lord Chancellor to the incorrigible Henry VIII he achieved much both at home and abroad, but his failure to achieve the mighty monarch’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon saw him brought to his knees.

John Matusiak explores the pragmatic cardinal’s life and career to uncover a man of contradictions and extremes whose meteoric rise was marked by an equally inexorable descent into desperation, as he attempted in vain to satisfy the tempestuous master whose ambition ultimately broke him.

Far from being another familiar portrait of an overweight and overweening spider or cautionary tale of pride preceding a fall, this is the gripping story of how consummate talent, noble intentions and an eagle eye for the main chance can contrive with the vagaries of power politics to raise an individual to unheard of heights before finally consuming him.

York's Golden Half Mile: The Story of Coney Street - York & Yorkshire

JORVIK Viking Centre, including DIG, Barley Hall and Micklegate Bar.

Coney Street was once dubbed 'York's Golden Half Mile' because of the glamour of its costumiers and furriers, pubs and restaurants. Today the street is as vibrant as any in the UK, and is crowned by York's magnificent Mansion House and Guildhall.

This book by oral historian Van Wilson brings the area vividly to life through fascinating reminiscences of local people. They recall in affectionate detail stores straight out of 'Are You Being Served', with deep offence caused by undressed window dummies, lunches of bread and dripping, and characters such as the waitress nick-named Major Booth who would rap courting couples on the knuckles if caught holding hands under the table!

Full of wonderful photographs never before published, and underpinned by considerable historical research, the book will appeal to anybody interested in York's history and social development, and in oral history in general.
